Speaking of notable events, this Mother's Day will definitely be remembered as the one when Osten broke his arm. He is doing remarkably well as his bones mend, but it's unbelievably heart-wrenching to see his little arm covered in a bandage and (in theory) immobilized in a sling. We were supposed to be at Hilton Head visting friends for Mother's Day, and Osten has been talking almost incessantly for weeks about going to the beach. Of course, we had to can that plan and quickly formulate a new one.
The day started with breakfast in bed. Both kids helped Daddy make eggs and toast, and they were right in tow as he delivered breakfast with coffee (!!) on a tray. The kids used permanent marker (?!?!) to decorate a hilarious Michael Scott talking card, and when they went to bed tonight their faces (as well as the kitchen table) still bore stray marks as evidence of their creative efforts.
Earlier in the week, Tom took Osten shopping for an inexpensive gift of his choosing. Marci is still a little young for shopping expeditions, so Osten cast her vote by proxy. He chose the sweetest blue and green sparkly "birdie" pin and a silver bangle bracelet. They were both sitting on the tray with breakfast. When I asked the kids which one I should open first, Osten proudly pointed to the smaller box and said, "Open the birdie first!" Priceless.
With the beach trip canceled, we decided to take the kids to the movies. Probably not the best idea given the kids' young ages, but the options are pretty slim when physical activity is restricted. As it turns out, Marci LOVES popcorn, and Osten is not much of a Harry Potter fan.
We sailed through the previews, but then only made it through about ten minutes of Monsters v. Aliens before Marci was crying and rolling around on the floor. Meanwhile, Osten decided that the audio was way too loud, and he was ready to go, too. And so we grabbed our 3-D glasses and back out into the lobby we went.
The lobby is where the real action is anyway. We spent the next 20 minutes watching the kids climb on the video games and run around. Lesson learned. Should we find ourselves at a movie theatre again in the near future, we'll bypass the box office, eat our popcorn in the lobby and watch the kids play video games!
